Blackbaud

Data Science Intern | May 2018 to June 2019

In the summer of my Junior year at College of Charleston, using primarily Python and Amazon Web Services, I designed models to predict the value of a given philanthropic donor over a three-year response period. In addition to donor-modeling, the internship also provided the opportunity to get involved with the Blackbaud Institute. I contributed by generating research tools to assist Thought Leadership on End of Year philanthropists. Which donor segments are philanthropically inclined in particular periods of the year? Does the number of children in a household, or the discretionary income of a constituent, indicate a propensity to give? Are certain marketing channels or platforms more impactful for prospective givers? Generating answers to these questions involved building visualization tools to explore socio-economics, geography, and social fluency within segments of donors - and the final output was a comprehensive document for the Institute to leverage in authoring a whitepaper on End of Year giving.

I continued my professional development with Blackbaud, in the spring of my Senior year. In my Capstone project, on a team with two other engineers. We designed an ETL tool (Extract Transform Load), using Spark and Databricks within Microsoft Azure. The interface was built with Blackbaud's in-house framework SkyUx, and included heavy use of  the JavaScript package - D3. The goal was to deliver a tool to explore actionable relationships in the Social Good community. The interactive tool that illustrated constituents common connections, and contributions, to different organizations as nodes in a graph structure gave a visual picture of the social good community that helped stakeholders better understand the philanthropic landscape.

Smithey Ironware Company

Workshop Manager | March 2017 to September 2018

Data Science & Analytics Intern | January 2019 to May 2019

I was introduced to Isaac Morton, the founder and CEO of Smithey Ironware, by a mutual friend during my first semester at the College of Charleston. Isaac was looking for someone like me to provide support in the warehouse to meet the growing demand for his product, while he continued to generate relationships with vendors throughout the country. As I handled the output - from polishing, seasoning, and packaging skillets, I was able to watch the business grow from its nascent stages to a strong brand first-hand. The immediate value that I added to Smithey was the consistent delivery of products at the quality that met the brand's standards as it established itself in the marketplace of fine cast-iron cookware. Below is a video produced by Tastemade, as we rolled out our product on their platform:

In the warehouse, I was able work autonomously. In tuning the process of seasoning, refining the approach to salvaging blemished pieces, and organizing the layout of the shop to optimize the efficiency of how each space was used, I sought to match the production to the steady increase in demand. Every week was a fun exercise to meet the growth, Isaac and I adapted our workflow to ensure the delivery of skillets from raw to ready-to-ship as new vendors, websites, and local shops joined the Smithey network. Isaac remained a valuable mentor throughout my college career, and I proactively maintained a strong relationship with the company engaging and contributing where I could during events like Charleston Wine + Food and the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.

In my final semester of college I returned to Smithey for an independent study. The company had grown to employee roughly 10 hard-working team members in the warehouse, and two additional employees to the front office to support strategy and sales. My goal this time was to optimize a different area of the business - how data was used internally. I collaborated with Will, the new VP of Sales and Marketing, to build tools to inform the business about the growing distribution of their products, and consumer base. Our conversations focused on data available through the sales pipeline, and targeted insights about the geography and demographics of customers. The outcomes included heat-maps across the United States, time-series visualizations demonstrating growth in various areas, and segments of consumers by products to provide context for the numbers behind the increase in revenue. The end-to-end process from working with the business, to delivering the technology and giving weekly demos to stakeholders, was an extremely valuable experience in my last semester in college.

Spirit of South Carolina

Deckhand | May 2016 to August 2016

Regatta Crew | May 2017

Between May and August of 2016, I sailed on the crew of the Spirit. After working on the boat for a month, preparing it for the summer's journey through daily maintenance & standard bosunry (most of which, I learned on the fly), we became seaworthy and obtained our USCG Certificate of Inspection.

Our itinerary originated in Charleston, and traveling along the east coast to Mystic Seaport, Connecticut we made it north a handful of days later. One of the memorable experiences from the five day journey was helming the 140ft schooner up the narrow Mystic river. From there, we meandered towards New London, onto Jamestown, through the Cape Cod Canal which included a pass by my high school alma mater St. George's, and out to Provincetown, finally resting for a few days in Boston. Later in the summer, we traveled to Maine twice - once to Casco Bay area, and last for me, to Rockport where I diembarked. The work on Spirit supplemented rigorous physical work with topics in maritime sciences and the routine of allocated rotational duties. Many stories germinated as a result of the close quarters with shipmates from all walks of life. Our crew had a unique dynamic, and distinct personalities.

After my summer with the Spirit of South Carolina I maintained frequent contact with Captain Richard Bailey, and was beckoned once more to join Spirit as a crew member for a passage from Charleston to Bermuda - one leg in a long regatta for tallships. The 4+ day race in Bermuda during the America's Cup, were an amazing experience.
